Currently, the green card renewal time line is approximately 10 to 12 months. However, poorly prepared applications can result in processing times which are much longer. The good news is that it's possible to get temporary proof of permanent resident status for travel abroad, employment and other purposes.
The processing time for a renewal has been estimated by Citizenship and Immigration Canada as being 98 days from submission. This does not necessarily mean that you will receive your new PR Card in exactly 98 days from when you submitted your application.
How many times can I renew my PR card? You can renew your PR card as many times as you want as long as your permanent resident status is valid.
However, note that the COPR is not the same as a PR card. As mentioned before, your COPR is a one-time entry visa. This is an official record of when you become a PR in Canada. Whereas, a PR card is used to prove that you are a PR on your return to Canada, by either train, plane, bus, or boat.
The PR Card renewal process will take a minimum of 49 days and if required can be done quicker with urgent processing. A fee of $50 has to be paid for PR renewal. To pay for a renewal of the PR Card you must pay online and print the receipt to be attached to your application.
