Before any university in the U.S. gives you an I-20 form, you are required to submit an Affidavit of Support. This form basically shows that you have sufficient funds to cover the cost of your stay in the United States.
Each personal sponsor (friends or family) must provide a statement or letter from the bank showing U.S. dollars or type of currency where the account is held totaling the amount needed. The sponsor on the Affidavit of Financial Support and the account holder on the official bank statement must be the same.
The processing time of the Affidavit of Support takes at least 6 weeks. After the NVC receives the documents from USCIS, they process them. The NVC will look at the sponsors Affidavit of Support and supporting documents. The applicant must have paid the fees for the Affidavit of Support to receive processing.

An Affidavit of Support, also called the Form I-864, is a document an individual signs to accept financial responsibility for the applicant who is coming to live in the United States.
There is no fee if the sponsored immigrant files this form with USCIS through Adjustment of Status (Form I-485). However, if the applicant is outside the U.S. and applying for Consular Processing (immigrant visa application at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate), a fee of $120 must be paid for filing Form I-864.
