There are no automatic exemptions or excuses from jury service in New York State. Everyone who is eligible must serve. You are eligible to serve as a juror in New York State if you are: 1) a United States citizen, 2) at least 18 years old, and 3) a resident of the county to which you are summoned to serve.
To qualify for taking part in jury service, a person must: be at least 18, and under 76, years of age.
Theres no automatic exemption from jury service for being elderly. You can ask to be excluded when youre over 70.
All applications for discretionary excusal are considered on an individual basis and will only be granted if very good reasons are provided. Those over the age of 70 or who have served on a jury in the previous two years can cite these as reasons to be excused.

To defer jury service, or be excused, you have to write to the Jury Central Summoning Bureau. Youll need to explain why and provide evidence. Applications must be considered carefully, sympathetically and with regard to the individual circumstances of the applicant.
If granted, excuse periods may not exceed 24 months. Medical, Caregivers, Financial and Full Time Students REQUIRE PROOF. Please mail the required proof along with the original signed Jury Summons (Part A) to the above address.
Pennsylvania law does not exclude persons due to their age. Jurors are to be over the age of 18. However, if you are 70 years of age or older you may be excused without a doctors note.
