In March 2020, Los Angeles' public-transit agency, Metro, stopped collecting fares on its buses as a COVID-19 safety precaution. For the next 22 months, Metro waived fares for anyone who wanted to keep riding its buses, anywhere they wanted to go (as long as they wore a mask, of course).
How to Ride Metro Bus. Fares can be paid using cash (exact change) or a TAP card. Regular fare is $1.75 and is good for 2 hrs of unlimited transfers in one direction.

You can now use your chosen contactless debit or credit card, smartphone, or smart device at any OMNY reader to ride at the Reduced-Fare rate. No pre-payment is required \u2014 simply tap and go. Your Reduced-Fare OMNY ride costs $1.35, the same as a subway or local bus fare with a Reduced-Fare MetroCard.
4.1 Each tap of the Card is valid only for one boarding on any individual bus or train. Transfer to another bus or train requires another tap of the Card. Cardholder shall ensure the Card has a valid fare product each time the Card is tapped.
The TAP Card is used for fares on the light rail/subway and buses. Each person needs a TAP Card \u2014 no sharing. The only exception: two children under 5 years old may ride for free when accompanied by a paying adult. To ride the LA Metro light rail/subway, you need to tap your TAP Card for each train you ride.
For example, a TAP card with a Metro Day Pass is not accepted on any LADOT Commuter Express or DASH bus, and a LADOT Commuter Express pass is not valid on Metro.
