The Certificate of Eligibility is a statement that the Godmother and Godfather are members in good standing in the parish in which they worship and that they are competent to act as godparent/sponsor. The Church has established the following norms governing the qualifications needed to be a Godparent.
In general, if a potential godparent is not a member of the parish where the baptism is to take place, he or she must obtain a letter or certificate (commonly known as a Letter of Good Standing) from their own pastor which affirms that they meet the above requirements.
