The state of California requires 4,500 hours of work to be eligible to take the residential electrician exam, and 8,000 hours of work for the general electrician exam. Both require 150 hours of classroom and lab-based technical training for every year you participate in an electrical training program or apprenticeship.
You will need to complete at least 720 hours of electrician instruction from an approved trade school/apprenticeship program that combines hands-on training with classroom instruction. You will also need to gain 8,000 hours (approx. 4 years) of on-the-job experience (which also can be part of an apprenticeship).
Before you can take the examination, you must apply and be approved by DLSE. Applications may be obtained from DLSE or online at .dir.ca.gov/dlse/ecu/ElectricalTrade.html. The completed application, any other required supporting documentation and the application fee should be sent to DLSE at the address below.
