If we apply a potential difference to any conductor and measure the current that results, the resistance of the conductor is the voltage drop divided by the current. That is, R(ohms) = V(volts)/I(amperes). This equation is the definition of electrical resistance.
The fall of potential method, also called the 3-wire or 3-spike method, is a common way of measurement and the first recommendation by standard IEEE 80. It is particularly useful for earths in remote locations.
The fall-of-potential method involves passing an electrical current through the grounding system electrode (A and M), and at the same time measuring the electrical potential between the grounding system and a probing electrode (N).
The 3-point method, called the fall of potential method, comprises the ground electrode to be measured and two other electrically independent test electrodes, usually labelled P (Potential) and C (Current).
3-point (Fall-of-potential) method With a four terminal tester, P1 and C1 terminals on the instrument are jumped and connected to the earth electrode under test while the C2 reference rod is driven into the earth straight out as far from the electrode under test as possible.

In the three-wire method, terminals W1 and T1 are connected with a jumper and attached to the test earthing with one wire. Terminal W2 is connected to the potential rod with a wire, and terminal T2 is connected to the current rod. The benefit of the three-wire method includes lower number of wires.
