Fingerprints are made from the raised lines on the fingertips, called ridges and the indented portions of the fingertip, called furrows. The ridges and furrows form three common characteristic patterns: loops, whorls, and arches.
No two fingerprints are identical. o All of your own fingerprints are different. o Even identical twins, who share the same DNA, have different fingerprints. Fingerprints can be made by palms of hands, fingertips, soles of feet and surfaces of toes.
The basis of the traditional fingerprinting technique is simple. The skin on the palmar surface of the hands and feet forms ridges, so-called papillary ridges, in patterns that are unique to each individual and which do not change over time. Even identical twins (who share their DNA) do not have identical fingerprints.
No two people have the same fingerprints, not even identical twins. Neither do fingerprints change, even as we get older, unless the deep or basal layer is destroyed or intentionally changed by plastic surgery. There are three main fingerprint patterns, called arches, loops and whorls.
One of the most important uses for fingerprints is to help investigators link one crime scene to another involving the same person. Fingerprint identification also helps investigators to track a criminals record, their previous arrests and convictions, to aid in sentencing, probation, parole and pardoning decisions.
