A backcountry permit is required for overnight camping throughout the national park system.
The Grand Canyons Backcountry Information Center reports theyve seen 800 permit requests in a day and its estimated that three out of four permit requests to backpack across the canyon are rejected.
Permittees are allowed to camp at-large between the parks north boundary and the North Kaibab trailhead but not at the trailhead itself. Between the North Kaibab trailhead and the Bright Angel Point area, camping is permitted only at the North Rim Campground group campsite.
The Permit is included in a guided, commercial trip. For a private trip you have to enter the Permit Lottery and thats time consuming. Even a commercial trip might have a waiting list of one or two years though.
