If you qualify for SGLI, you are automatically enrolled and issued the maximum SGLI coverage. For complete information regarding eligibility and coverage, please visit the SGLI page on the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) website.
How does SGLI life insurance work?
If you have SGLI coverage, youll pay a monthly premium thatll be automatically taken out of your base pay. The current basic SGLI premium rate is 5 cents per $1,000 of insurance coverage. The premium includes an additional $1 per month for Traumatic Injury Protection coverage (TSGLI).
How much does SGLI pay?
- The SGLI maximum coverage amount will increase from $400,000 to $500,000 effective March 1, 2023, due to Public Law 117-209, signed by the President on Oct. 17, 2022. This increase will occur automatically for service members eligible for SGLI coverage, including those who previously declined SGLI coverage.
How long does it take for SGLI to pay?
Claims are filed using SGLV Form 8283 - Claim for Death Benefits. Settlement is normally made within 60 days. Payment is made to the principal beneficiary (ies) listed on the SGLV Form 8286 - Servicemembers Group Life Insurance Election Certificate.
