What is the SGLI Disability Extension? The SGLI Disability Extension allows service members who are totally disabled at time of discharge to retain the Servicemembers Group Life Insurance (SGLI) coverage they had in service at no cost for up to two years.
Yes. VA benefits include Service-Disability Life Insurance (S-DVI) for veterans who were disabled either by illness or injury during their service. Those veterans who qualify for total disability may receive a waiver of premiums for up to $10,000 in life insurance, which means the VA is paying for the policy.
Benefit periods for short-term disability average between three and 12 months, while long-term disability coverage, as the name suggests, covers a more extended benefit period that can average between 2 to 10 years and possibly longer.
Your SGLI coverage will be extended for a maximum of two years from your date of discharge or until you are able to work, whichever comes first. Important Note: See the information under After Your Extension Ends to learn more about what will happen at the end of the free Disability Extension.
