Active duty or retired Soldiers may request assistance from any military aid society office located within 50 miles of their current locations. If an office is not found within 50 miles, Soldiers can receive AER assistance through the American Red Cross at 1-877-272-7337.
Every request is unique and considered on an individual basis. There is no upper limit for AER support, however, the most common assistance we provide is $1,500 for a 15-month loan. Some categories of assistance have dollar limits and other categories have requirements related to grants versus loans.
AER provides funds to help soldiers with immediate financial needs with rent, utilities, emergency travel, etc. AER also provides emergency funds to soldiers orphans and Surviving Spouses and offers undergraduate scholarships to Spouses and Children of both active and retired soldiers.
Eligibility. The following individuals are eligible for AER assistance in ance with Army Regulation 930-4: Soldiers on active duty and their eligible dependents. Army Reserve and National Guard Soldiers activated on Title 10 orders for more than 30 days and their eligible dependents.
Commanders who do not desire to approve assistance under the Commanders Referral Program can still recommend approval on AER Form 700, Application for Army Emergency Relief, by completing section 13. Authorized Categories of Assistance 1. Food 2.
AER supported more than 31,000 soldiers and families in 2023. Retired Army National Guard Soldiers are eligible to receive AER funds IF they are retired from active duty due to physical disability, or retired at age 60 under section 1331, title 10, United States Code.
Legal Expenses AER does not normally assist with legal fees for civilian court, fines, judgments, liens, bail, divorces, child custody cases, domestic disputes, and income taxes. Assistance is not authorized to replace funds for overdrawn bank account or to cover bad checks.
