Reviewed by: Megan Kelly, MA, LMHC. Becoming a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) designates an individual as a trained and licensed professional in the fields of mental health and psychotherapy in the United States.
They are not awarded a medical degree, are not medical doctors, and are not qualified to prescribe medication. Counselors use therapy and the tools and skills developed in their postgraduate degrees to help their patients.
This stands for Licensed Professional Counselor. This person holds at least a Masters degree in a mental health discipline (MA or MS in psychology, counseling, social work etc.)
The primary difference is that LPCs need a masters degree or higher, while psychologists need a doctorate. Beyond that, the specific requirements for these careers regarding education, training, and experience vary from one state to the next because licensure is handled at the state level.
Licensed psychologists are qualified to do counseling and psychotherapy, perform psychological testing, and provide treatment for mental disorders. They are not, though, medical doctors. That means that, with the exception of a few states, psychologists cannot write prescriptions or perform medical procedures.
