What are some common tics? Tics typically begin during elementary school age. Movements are referred to as motor tics, and vocalizations are referred to as vocal or phonic tics. Common tics include excessive blinking, facial grimacing, shoulder-shrugging, sniffing and grunting.
The Yale Global Tic Severity Scale (YGTSS) is a new clinical rating instrument that was designed for use in studies of Tourettes syndrome and other tic disorders. The YGTSS provides an evaluation of the number, frequency, intensity, complexity, and interference of motor and phonic symptoms.
YGTSS Total Tic Score: 0 = normal (inferred), 16 = borderline (inferred), 710 = mild, 1127 = moderate, 2843 = marked, 4346 = severe, 4750 = extreme (inferred). YGTSS Impairment Score: not included = normal and borderline, 07 = mild, 829 = moderate, 3042 = marked, 4350 = severe, not included = extreme.
The YGTSS is administered by a blinded outcome assessor as an investigator-based semistructured interview focusing on motor and vocal tic frequency, severity and tic-related impairment over the previous week.
A Global Severity Score (range: 0100) is derived by summing the Total Motor Tic Score, Total Phonic Tic Score and Overall Impairment Rating.
