Natera, a leading innovator in prenatal genetic testing, today announced the expansion of the Panorama\u2122 non-invasive prenatal test (NIPT) to screen for five clinically relevant microdeletion syndromes. The expanded test will become available on March 1, 2014.
While private insurance companies typically do not cover NIPT, they often cover other less sensitive and specific screens, such as FTS or maternal serum quad screening, or they approve and cover diagnostic, invasive procedures such as amniocentesis and CVS for any woman, regardless of risk factors.
Why have an NIPT? The NIPT is highly sensitive and picks up more than 99% of cases of Down syndrome. But it is still a screening test rather than a diagnostic test. This means it can only tell you whether there is an increased risk of having a baby with an abnormality, rather than give you a definitive answer.
Non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) Panorama can be performed as early as nine weeks gestation. Most results will be returned to your doctor within 5-7 calendar days.
Because Panorama uses a unique technology to distinguish between the pregnant person's and the baby's DNA, it is the only NIPT that tests for triploidy, and it can avoid known sources of error that affect other NIPTs. Some conditions, such as Down syndrome, are caused by extra copies of a specific chromosome.

NIPT is available to all pregnant individuals in Ontario but will only be covered by Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) if one of the specific criteria is met at the time of blood draw. If you do not meet any of the requirements, NIPT can be paid for out-of-pocket.
