Under the Master Settlement Agreement, seven tobacco companies agreed to change the way they market tobacco products and to pay the states an estimated $206 billion.

U.S. Tobacco Cooperative Inc., formerly known as Flue-Cured Tobacco Cooperative Stabilization Corporation, has reportedly agreed to a $24 million class action settlement involving claims made by current and former members over reserve funds.
The MSA also created new restrictions, including: Cartoons in cigarette advertising were eliminated. Outdoor, billboard and public transit advertising of cigarettes was eliminated. Cigarette brand names could no longer be used on merchandise.
The funding from the settlement was intended to be allocated to lifesaving tobacco prevention efforts in states, not just when the agreement was signed, but through annual payments by the tobacco companies to the states for as long as they continue to sell cigarettes due to the death and disease their products cause.
