The Iowa Departments of Public Health (IDPH) and Human Services (DHS) are becoming one, single, department. IDPH and DHS will fully transition into the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) by July 1, 2023.
After 16 weeks of training, recruits graduate. The state recognizes them as police officers.
The DPS Academy is 20 weeks long. We also offer a 10-week Academy for certified officers during the next certified hiring process. Please note that if you are currently certified and you apply to the Basic Academy, you will need to complete the full 20-weeks.
Curriculum. The Basic Academy is 639 hours over 16 weeks. For more detailed topic areas and hour requirements, please see the Curriculum page.
Child abuse mandatory reporter training is required for most school employees. The training is two hours and available in English and Spanish.
