The central theme of the novel The Guide is the transformation of Raju from a tourist guide to the spiritual guide. The novels two stories - one in which Rajus life of tourist guide and his relationship with rosie is described, another part presents his relation with villagers as a holy person.
There are allusions in The Guide made to what happens in The River, but the author handled it with great finesse so that readers can go back and read the previous book and enjoy the full tale.
While reading the River book series in order is not critical, doing so will help you keep tabs on whos who and ensure you meet new characters in the order they were introduced.
Jess Payot Its not recommended to read The Narrows first if youre planning to read The Poet, it will spoil crazy plot twists in the later part of the latter. Remember, The Poet is one of Connellys best novels.
Tolkien wrote it for people already familiar with his world This is probably the main reason why I think you should skip it when you first enter Tolkiens world. This prologue was not written for readers who dont know anything about Middle-earth. It isnt an introduction, as one may think, given it is a prologue.
