Total score: between 6 (maximum performance) and 0 (lack of performance). Also: score of 6 (full function), 4 (moderate impairment), and 2 or less (severe functional impairment).
The Index ranks adequacy of performance in six functions: bathing, dressing, toileting, transferring, continence, and feeding. One point means the person is independent; zero points means the person requires supervision, direction, personal assistance or total care.
