TANF stands for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families. TANF is a time-limited program that helps families when parents or other relatives cannot provide for the familys basic needs. The federal government provides grants to states to run the TANF program.
What is non-TANF child support (non-IV-D child support)? If neither parent has a history of receiving public assistance or state social services, the support ordered by the family court judge may be non-IV-D (also called non-TANF) meaning the state wont enforce payments.
There were approximately 419,100 child-only families (those in which no adult received TANF cash assistance), which accounted for 52.1 percent of the total TANF caseload in an average month.
TANF families are defined, for this report, as those that received TANF in one or more of the past 12 months, reads the report. Poor non-TANF families are those that did not receive TANF in any of the past 12 months and whose average income-to-poverty ratio over the past 12 months was less than 1.0.
A parent earning $1,000 a week could expect the basic child support amount to be adjusted based on the number of children and the percentage of time each parent spends with the children. For example, for one child and equal custody, the guideline might suggest approximately $214 per month.
