AFTRS is the national screen and broadcast school the only Australian education institution to consistently make The Hollywood Reporters prestigious annual list of the top film schools in the world.
AFTRS is a Commonwealth statutory authority and cultural agency. It was established in 1973 by a bipartisan Act of Parliament the Australian Film, Television and Radio School Act 1973. As a statutory body, it also operates under the Public Governance, Performance and Accountability Act 2013 (PGPA Act).
Film schools are great for the networking with directors and the equipment / facilities but they can also be incredibly slow, expensive and frustrating with the curriculum. It is what you make it. The directors you meet though, in the long run can pay off big time if you continue to nurture those relationships.
Entry into AFTRS is gained through a merit-based, competitive process. Expectations of students are high: some courses run from 9.30am to 5pm, Monday to Friday, and the school explicitly informs students that working part-time while studying may be difficult.
