In February 1999, the CAP National Board formally approved the following core values: Integrity, Volunteer Service, Excellence, and Respect. Over time, CAP has integrated these core values into all professional development programs for senior members and cadets.

The CAPs Distinguished Service Medal is the third highest decoration possible in the CAP and is awarded for conspicuous performance of outstanding service in a duty of great responsibility. This is usually awarded for completion of an extremely difficult duty of marked national significance.
Civil Air Patrol members are not employees of CAP; they are volunteers who provide their services for the public good without expectation or receipt of salary, pay, remuneration, or compensation of any kind. Membership is on an annual basis.
The National Commanders Unit Citation Award was approved by the Civil Air Patrols National Board at its March 2006 meeting.
