The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary is the uniformed, all-volunteer component of the United States Coast Guard. The Auxiliary was created by an Act of Congress in 1939, and has grown to over 32,000 members who daily support the Coast Guard in all its non-military, and non-law-enforcement missions.
This is true - the total process can take half a year or longer, due to a required Security Check. But most training and many service opportunities with the Auxiliary can begin once the Application is approved - usually a month or so after the Application is submitted.

5.20 Authority. (b) Members of the Auxiliary are not authorized to engage in direct law enforcement or military missions. (c) Members of the Auxiliary are not authorized to enforce limited access areas, regulated navigation areas, or special local regulations.
When you qualify through training, you can take part in Search and Rescue operations, stand radio watch at the Coast Guard Station, work with the Marine Safety Office on pollution matters or work in the Recruiting Office. Auxiliarists arent paid with money, but with satisfaction.
