A wellhead protection area (WHPA) is the area around the wellhead that contributes source water to a drinking water system (i.e. a municipal well). A WHPA shows where groundwater is coming from to supply a municipal well, and how fast it is travelling through the ground toward the well.
Wellfield means the area or region under which the Citys drinking water aquifer is located and which contains the Citys potable water wells for ex- traction of groundwater for public drinking water purposes.
Broward Countys main source of water comes from the Biscayne Aquifer (figure below), one of the most productive aquifers in the world. It provides nearly 1 billion gallons a day on average.
A wellfield is the area surrounding a permitted well where 100,000 gallons or more of potable water is pumped out of the ground per day. They are further categorized into wellfield zones based on the time it takes water in the aquifer to travel to the wellhead where it is pumped out and sent to a treatment plant.
The protection areas are designated based on geological characteristics of the aquifer and the flow of water through it. New activities that use or store hazardous materials or generate hazardous waste are prohibited within certain parts of the wellfield protection areas.
