How long is the body kept at the Coroners office? Normally we try to release the decedent to a funeral home within two to three days. Depending on the circumstances of the death, and confirming identification, sometimes it is necessary to keep the remains longer.
If the legal next of kin fails to inter the remains, after thirty (30) days, the Medical Examiner-Coroner will proceed with Indigent Cremation.
As such, final disposition or body disposition refers to how a dead body is handled after death. This can include traditional funeral options like cremation and burial but can also include events associated with these, such as interment or ash scattering.
Before we can release remains to your funeral home, you must complete a Body Release Authorization Form. This form is to ensure the OCME that you have been designated to provide final arrangements. The updated form requires the funeral home or crematory to complete the form prior to the OCME releasing the decedent.
Our investigation should not delay your funeral plans. Although the Medical Examiner-Coroners Office does not release decedents on Saturdays, Sundays, or designated holidays, we typically complete our investigation and release the decedent to the designated funeral home or cremation service within 48 hours.
