Herding tests offer herding breed owners a way to measure a dogs basic instinct and trainability. Competitive herding trials preserve and develop the herding skills inherent in the herding breeds and demonstrate that they can perform the useful functions for which they were originally bred.
Kennel must be neat and clean free of dirt, fecal accumulation, odors and parasite infestation. Good ventilation and proper temperatures must be maintained within healthful comfortable limits for the dogs. Fencing must be sturdy and well maintained being of substantial strength and height to safely secure dogs.
All dogs nine (9) months of age or older from breeds accepted into the herding program that are registered with The American Kennel Club are eligible to participate in herding tests and trials. However, dogs may enter an Instinct test at six months of age.
There are three test levels started, intermediate, and advanced, and three courses to choose from: A, B, C, with each course type focusing on various aspects of herding work such as versatility, control, and movement of stock in an extended area, or tending to the flock in an unfenced area such as a road or in
