A class A license is considered the universal CDL, providing the opportunity to drive multiple types of commercial trucks and tractor trailers. A class B license also allows the operation of different types of vehicles such as straight trucks and dump trucks, but it is more limiting than a class A CDL.
For more detailed information see New York State permit and license classes. Step 1: Prepare for the Commercial Permit Test. Step 2: Find What You Need to Apply. Step 3: Take the Test and Get a CDL Permit. Step 4: Prepare for Your Road Test. Step 5: Schedule and Take Your Road Test. Step 6: Get Your Road Test Results.
A Class A CDL is the most versatile commercial license and qualifies drivers to operate a combination of vehicles with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, as long as the trailer exceeds 10,000 pounds. This license is typically required for driving tractor-trailers and flatbeds.
Class B CDL is gross weight over 26000 pounds and towing 10000 pounds or less. Class A is gross weight over 26000 pounds and towing greater than 10000 pounds. So basically the difference tween the class A and Class B CDL is whether youre towing more or less than 10000 pounds.
Drivers are required to keep a current medical variance or medical examiners certificate on file with DPS, and failure to do so will result in the downgrade of the individuals CDL.
