A Letter of Intent (LOI) is a document that allows you to form an understanding with another party when intending to enter a legally binding agreement. If you are negotiating or entering into a sale, partnership, or lease, a Letter of Intent can set the terms for the future deal.
Dear [Superintendent Name]: This letter is to inform you of our intent to homeschool our child(ren), [list names of child(ren)] for the [school year, i.e. 2024-2025] school year. As parents of [list names of child(ren)] we are qualified to provide them with a home education.
Once you have written the Letter of Intent, send it to the superintendent of your local county school district. The superintendent will typically respond to acknowledge receipt of your letter.
New York, Vermont, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island are the states with the highest level of regulation for homeschooling. These states all require you to give notice to the state that you intend to homeschool your child or student.
For states that require a lot of paperwork in order to homeschool legally, the letter of intent is generally the first step in filing. A notice of intent to homeschool does not usually require a witness or notary.
