PURPOSE. The Hot Work Permit system is intended to assure that the individuals involved in construction, renovation, repairs and maintenance of University facilities are aware of the hazards associated with hot work and welding and that they implement control measures to help mitigate them.
Cold work permits are required for any work that will be done in a temperature-controlled environment, such as a refrigerator or freezer. Hot work permits are required for any work that will be done in an area where there is a potential for fire or explosion, such as welding or cutting.
All temporary operations involving open flames or producing heat and/or sparks require a Hot Work Permit. This includes, but is not limited to, Brazing, Cutting, Grinding, Soldering, Thawing, and Welding.
Hot work means work involving electric or gas welding, cutting, brazing, or similar flame or spark-producing operations (68.3). Facilities that perform hot work operations conducted on or near a covered process shall issue a hot work permit, and it must be kept on file until hot work operations are completed.
Hot work is any work that involves burning, welding, cutting, brazing, soldering, grinding, using fire- or spark-producing tools, or other work that produces a source of ignition.
