Standard briefings provide a complete and detailed depiction of the weather elements and aeronautical information for the intended flight. A standard briefing may be obtained within six hours of estimated time of departure (ETD) and may be requested multiple times for flights during dynamic weather.
Types of Weather Briefings. A pilot can request three main types of weather briefings: standard, abbreviated and outlook.
The best way to obtain a briefing is to call or visit an FAA Flight Service Station (FSS). The briefers employed there are trained to help pilots obtain and understand weather information. Unless you ask for something differentmore about this laterthe FSS briefer will give you a standard briefing.
The FAA has established a universal toll-free telephone number for FSSs: 1800WXBRIEF (18009927433). Before contacting Flight Service, you should have the general route of flight worked out. When you reach Flight Service, you will first hear a recorded announcement, followed by instructions.
Flight Service is one of the primary sources for obtaining preflight briefings and to file flight plans by phone or the Internet. Flight Service Specialists are qualified and certificated as Pilot Weather Briefers by the FAA.
