The Value-Added Producer Grant (VAPG) program helps agricultural producers enter value-added activities to generate new products, create and expand marketing opportunities, and increase producer income. You may receive priority if you are a: Beginning farmer or rancher. Veteran farmer or rancher.
Value-added products are defined by USDA as having: A change in the physical state or form of the product (such as milling wheat into flour or making strawberries into jam). The production of a product in a manner that enhances its value (such as organically produced products).
VAP is essentially any process that creates a product into a more valuable product. For example, a tomato farmer can turn her tomatoes into tomato sauce and sell it at a higher price.
Examples of value added agricultural products include garlic braids, bagged salad mix, artisan bread, lavender soaps and sausages.
Independent producers, agricultural producer groups, farmer- or rancher-cooperatives, and majority-controlled producer- based business ventures are eligible to apply for this program.
