What is a certificate of good standing for? A certificate of good standing (CGS) confirms to regulators in other countries that a doctor is in good standing with us. A CGS will show whether, at the time of issuing, the doctor is registered with us and if there are any restrictions on their practice in the UK.
All doctors intending to practise medicine in the UK are required to be registered with the GMC, follow the GMCs good medical practice guidance and be subject to the GMC Fitness to Practise actions. Doctors who hold registration but not a licence may be working as an academic or outside the UK.
The GMC licenses doctors to practise in the UK. The main purpose of registration is to ensure doctors conduct, professional performance and health meets certain requirements, and to protect the public. The GMC maintains a register of doctors.
The GMC is a charity registered in England and Wales (1089278) and Scotland (SC037750). If doctors want to practise medicine in the UK they need to be registered with a licence to practise*.
The GMC number can consist of seven numeric or L plus six numeric. The L format is used for limited registrations, usually overseas doctors, and in time this number could be changed to a permanent number, usually seven numeric. The General Dental Council (GDC) Number consists of D plus six numeric.
