To streamline commercial fire alarm regulations, the National Fire Protection Association first issued NFPA 72 guidelines in 1993. Known as the National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code, NFPA 72 sets the minimum standards for commercial fire alarm installation, performance, testing, inspection, and maintenance.
National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code NFPA 72 provides the latest safety provisions to meet societys changing fire detection, signaling, and emergency communications demands.
For many years NFPA 72, National Fire Alarm and Signaling Code, has required as a minimum that smoke alarms be installed inside every sleep room (even for existing homes) in addition to requiring them outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home. (Additional smoke alarms are required for larger homes.)
The prescriptive requirement in NFPA 72 is to consider each beam like a row of spot type detectors and to use the spacing requirements specified for spots. This results in 30 ft lateral spacing for level ceilings.
Of the many different parts and equipment associated with a fire alarm system, the following represents the bare minimum requirement to get started: Fire Alarm Control Panel. Initiating Devices. Notification Devices. Primary Power Supply. Secondary Power Supply.
