A department, program, or school / college may require additional members. Masters Degree: The thesis committee will consist of not less than three members. The committee chair must be Regular Faculty from the students program or department of concentration (this includes secondary appointments).

The thesis committee is there to support and guide the student through dissertation research. They evaluate your progress and help to make sure you are on track to get your dissertation within a reasonable time. Early in your graduate career, their focus will be on making sure you have defined and reasonable goals.
Who are the members of the thesis panel?
The Thesis Panel includes the Adviser, a Reader/Critic, and one to three other panel members. (The thesis panel can have 3 to 5 members.) All members of the panel must be at least masters degree holders, except in highly meritorious cases as approved by the Dean.
What is a thesis in grad school?
Your thesis committee has at least 2 members: An adviser (researcher, lecturer-researcher), from outside your laboratory and outside your thesis speciality. The adviser is a member of the doctoral school. This member is proposed by the doctoral school management.
