Background. The Boston Carpal Tunnel Questionnaire (BCTQ) is a disease-specific measure of self-reported symptom severity and functional status. It is frequently used in the reporting of outcomes from trials into interventions for carpal tunnel syndrome.
Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is an entrapment neuropathy caused by compression of the median nerve as it travels through the wrist's carpal tunnel. It is the most common nerve entrapment neuropathy, accounting for 90% of all neuropathies.
During carpal tunnel release, a surgeon makes an incision in the palm of your hand over the carpal tunnel ligament and cuts through the ligament to relieve pressure on the median nerve. The surgery may be done by making one incision on the palm side of the wrist, or by making several small incisions.
The highest sensitivity was found with the wrist flexion with pressure test for 60 s (96%) and the wrist extension with pressure test for 60 s (94%) (Table 1). The highest specificity was found in the wrist flexion with fingers flexed test for 30 s (95%), the wrist extension test for 30 s (93%) and Tinel's sign (93%).
The Boston Questionnaire was developed by Levine et al. at the Brigham and Women's Hospital as an assessment tool for clients with carpal tunnel syndrome. Consisting of an 11-item Symptom Severity Scale and an 8-item Functional Status Scale, the tool was not given a formal name in the initial publication.

This is a little simpler than the SSS/FSS. The patient is asked to rate each of 5 symptoms on a 0-10 scale \u2013 Pain, Numbness, Paraesthesia(tingling), Weakness/Clumsiness, and Nocturnal waking. The 5 scores are then added together to give a total measure of symptom severity which can range from 0 to 50.

The nerve conduction velocity test is one of the most dependable ways to diagnose carpal tunnel syndrome. By measuring how fast an electrical signal travels along the forearm's nerve or from the nerve to a muscle, this test can produce reliable evidence of the syndrome.
