The Transfer of Ownership form CG-1258 is utilized when: Purchasing/transferring a vessel: When the sale is finalized you may complete a U.S. Coast Guard Bill of Sale (CG-1340). If there is an outstanding mortgage, the mortgagee (lender) should complete a Satisfaction of Mortgage.
A renewal application can be made on the National Vessel Documentation Centers website. Expect to receive a notice of renewal from the Coast Guard, 45 days before expiration.
Certificates of Documentation may be issued only to vessels which are wholly owned by United States citizens. Vessels must be at least 5 net tons in order to qualify for US Coast Guard Documentation. Tonnage is a unit of volume, not weight. Most vessels greater than 25ft in length will measure at least 5 net tons.
Vessel Documentation Renewal Form (CG-1280) including multi-year renewal: Renewal of your Certificate of Documentation is to be completed annually unless multi-year renewal is selected.
