The PANAS measures two dimensions of affect: positive affect (PA) and negative affect (NA). Positive affect refers to positive, pleasant moods such as enthusiasm, activeness, and alertness while negative affect refers to distressed and irritable moods such as anger, fear, and nervousness (Watson et al., 1988).
Based on your PANAS scores: If you tend to express a lot of positive affect but express little negative affect, you are a cheerleader. You have lots of good moods and not too many bad moods. If you tend to show high negative affect and low positive affect, you are a poet.
This gives four different quadrants of mood states: energizedpleasant, energized-unpleasant, calm-pleasant, and calm-unpleasant.
The PANAS is free to use for non-profit research purposes. Those seeking to use the PANAS for commercial purposes are advised to get in touch with the American Psychological Association (APA) Permissions Office. Please click here for information on how to contact the APA Permissions Office.
The measure has been used mainly as a research tool in group studies, but can be utilized within clinical and non-clinical populations as well. Shortened, elongated, and childrens versions of the PANAS have been developed, taking approximately 510 minutes to complete.

The total score is calculated by finding the sum of the 10 positive items, and then the 10 negative items. Scores range from 10 50 for both sets of items. For the total positive score, a higher score indicates more of a positive affect. For the total negative score, a lower score indicates less of a negative affect.
