This visa is for people who arrived in Australia on a valid visa and want to seek asylum. It lets you stay in Australia permanently, if you engage Australia's protection obligations and meet all other requirements for the grant of the visa.
Generally, if you are able to apply for a substantive visa (substantive visas are visas other than a bridging visa), there is nothing to stop you from applying for 2 visas at the same time. If you are applying for 2 visas at the same time, the Department will grant you 2 bridging visas.
TPVs can last for up to three years, but some may be given for shorter periods. After a TPV expires, the holder can reapply for another TPV. TPV holders are permitted to work (potentially subject to certain restrictions), and have access to Medicare.

Overview. If you have previously been refused a protection visa\u2014including a permanent Protection visa, Temporary Protection visa or Safe Haven Enterprise visa\u2014or if you held a protection visa that was cancelled, you cannot make another application for a protection visa.
The Protection Visa has a processing time of 90 days, from the date of lodgement.
Protection Visas You can apply online or by post. You will need to complete Form 866. If you currently hold a Temporary Protection Visa (Subclass 785) ('TPV') or a Safe Haven Enterprise Visa (Subclass 790) ('SHEV') you must apply for another TPV or SHEV before your current visa stops.
You can't work with a student guardian visa while you are in Australia. However, you may study English for less than 20 hours a week if your first language is not English. You may also attend training or another course for three months.
