Veterans receiving Total Disability Individual Unemployability benefits (TDIU) receive compensation at the same rate as those who are considered 100% disabled. However, it is generally easier to be approved for TDIU benefits than it is to earn a 100% rating under the VA's schedular criteria.
Use VA Form 21-4192 if you're a Veteran and you need your most recent employer to send us information so you can apply for Individual Unemployability disability benefits. Your most recent employer must complete and submit this form.
Who Is Eligible for Individual Unemployability? You must be a Veteran. You must be unable to hold a job as a result of service-connected disabilities. This means maintaining substantially gainful employment.
The combined ratings of the disabilities must be at least equal to 70%. A veteran has ratings of 40% for a Lumbar Spine condition, 30% for a knee, and 30% for his PTSD. VA's combined rating math, results in a 70% rating. Since the veteran's spine is rated at 40% and he has a 70% total rating, he meets IU.
Under the first, VA would stop making IU payments to veterans age 67 or older (the full retirement age for Social Security benefits for those born after 1959). That restriction would apply to both current and prospective recipients.
