The new law is Real Property Tax Law 466-a, which is outlined below. On Dec. 9, 2022, Governor Hochul signed legislation that creates an opt-in for all local governments to provide a 10% property tax exemption to volunteer firefighters and volunteer ambulance workers (L 2022, ch 670, 1).
The volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers credit is available to full-year New York State residents who are active volunteer firefighters or volunteer ambulance workers for the entire tax year for which the credit is claimed. The credit is $200 for each active volunteer firefighter or ambulance worker.
Are volunteer firefighters paid for their work? Volunteer firefighters freely volunteer their efforts as a way of serving and giving back to their community. They often do not receive monetary compensation from the fire department. If they are paid, it is typically in the form of small stipends or annual bonuses.
The Volunteer Firefighters Benefits Law provides for cash benefits and/or medical care to volunteer firefighters who are injured or become ill in the line of duty. The local political subdivision pays for this insurance and cannot require the volunteer firefighter to contribute to the cost of coverage.
An exempt volunteer firefighter is hereby declared to be a person who as a member of a volunteer fire company duly organized under the laws of the state of New York shall have at any time after attaining the age of eighteen years faithfully actually performed service in the protection of life and property from fire
