Newly arrived international students and scholars in F-1 or J-1 visa status being paid by the university (e.g. compensation, taxable scholarship, fellowship, prize or award) are advised to apply for a SSN soon as possible. The processing takes 3-4 weeks but you should only need to do it once.
If you are in F-1 status and do not have lawful F-1 employment, you are ineligible to apply for a SSN. This includes applications for replacement SSN cards. J-1 students are required to show evidence of employment and must be in valid J-1 status and be registered for a full course of study.
In general, only noncitizens who have DHS permission to work can apply for a Social Security number. We suggest you wait 48 hours after reporting to your school before you apply for a Social Security number. This waiting will help ensure we can verify your immigration status with the DHS.
The IRS issues ITINs to individuals who are required to have a U.S. taxpayer identification number but who do not have, and are not eligible to obtain, a Social Security number (SSN) from the Social Security Administration (SSA).
Obtain an employment letter from the hiring department. Email International Student Services to request an appointment for a SSN letter (scan the employment letter). International Student Services will then provide the student with a status letter. Complete a SSA application with the Social Security Administration.
