NOTE: The QR code printed on the VARTA AGM and EFB batteries is used for internal purposes only. It does not contain the same information as an OE BEM code, and therefore cannot be used as a replacement of the OE BEM code to register new batteries in vehicles.
The letters and numbers in the code indicate the number of cells, cell chemistry, shape, dimensions, the number of parallel paths in the assembled battery and any modifying letters deemed necessary. A multi-section battery (two or more voltages from the same package) will have a multi-section designation.
Registration is required for all start-stop vehicles with IBS (intelligent battery sensor) from 2008 onwards. Without registration, the battery may be overcharged, otherwise the management system will not recognise that a new battery has been installed.
BEM codes always have two lines and are manufacturer and battery specific. One line usually notes the OE spare part number, often an alphanumerical part number for the OEM and OES sales channel. The second line notes the coding of the battery manufacturer, the date of installation of the battery and a specific number.
