If you see a banded bird (alive or dead) in North America, you can report it to bandreports@usgs.gov . If you photo a banded or tagged bird anywhere in the world, you can post it on iNaturalist and add it to the project Banded Birds. Reporting these birds contributes to scientific studies.
To find the owner, you need to know how to read the band. The band has a sequence of letters such as IF-0000-XXXX-16. The first letters are the governing organization the club belongs to (see below). Use these letters to determine which website to search for a club contact.
If you have found a racing pigeon, they will be wearing a leg band. The band will tell you where the bird is registered, the year the bird was hatched, the pigeon club, and the pigeons unique number. Some bands may have the owners name and contact information. If the bird does not have a band, it is a wild pigeon.
Pigeon bands should not be reported to the Bird Banding Laboratory. Instead, they can be reported to the American Racing Pigeon Union or the Canadian Racing Pigeon Union. Pigeon bands are plastic covered aluminum, usually colored plastic.
BC hosts four of these species: band-tailed pigeons and mourning doves are native, while Eurasian collared doves and rock doves are non-native aliens. Band-tailed pigeons (Patagioenas fasciata) can be found in southwestern BC, mostly the Lower Mainland and southern Vancouver Island.
