How long does NICS keep records?

The NICS will retain such records indefinitely, unless they are canceled by the originating agency. In cases where a firearms disability is not permanent, e.g., a disqualifying restraining order, the NICS will automatically purge the pertinent record when it is no longer disqualifying.

Does ATF know what guns I own?

The short answer is, kind of yes, but its not even close to that simple. The longer answer is this: All licensed and lawful firearm transactions are recorded on an ATF document called Form 4473, Firearm Transaction Record. This is a paper document that is kept on file with the firearm dealer (the store).

What happens to 4473 after 20 years?

Beginning in August 2022, dealers were required to keep completed forms indefinitely, with the option of sending forms over 20 years in to the ATF.

What is FFL verification proof?

The CFLC system validates a California FFLs active status against the California Centralized List. CFLC will generate a Firearms Shipment Approval letter including the verification approval number, if the intended California FFL recipient of the firearm shipment is properly licensed and listed in the states database.

How long are FFL records kept?

Contact FFL and confirm transfer Before buying a gun online, its best to have already contacted and secured an FFL dealer to conduct firearm transfers for you. So when speaking with them for the first time, confirm that they are willing to accept the firearm shipment and that youre comfortable with the dealers fee.
