Jurors are summoned randomly from countywide lists maintained by the Department of Motor Vehicles, the Franchise Tax Boards state tax filers, and the local registrar of voters. Inclusion on the list of eligible jurors does not guarantee that you will be immediately selected for jury service.
The law states grand jury applicants must have the following qualifications: Citizen of the United States. 18 years of age or older. Resident of state and county or city and county for one year prior to being selected. In possession of natural faculties, ordinary intelligence, sound judgment, fair character.
Federal jurors are randomly drawn from a courts jury wheel for possible qualification and summoning to report for a jury selection at a later date if they are deemed qualified and necessary for the courts trial schedule.
Grand jury service is for a 12-month period that begins on July 1 and ends the following June 30. Due to the number of investigations undertaken and the complexity of the investigation and reporting-writing processes, jurors should expect to spend 15-35 hours per week during most of their term.
