The person who performs or supervises a major repair or major alteration must prepare FAA Form 337. The form is executed at least in duplicate and is used to record major repairs and major alterations made to an aircraft, airframe, powerplant, propeller, appliance, or a component part thereof.
A field approval is the granting by an FAA airworthiness safety inspector of an FAA approval for a major repair or major alteration based on examination of data or physical inspection or testing. There are three kinds of field approvals for which the local FAA inspector can sign off in Block 3 of the FAA Form 337.
How to file form FL-335 Determine Eligibility: Ensure you are at least 18 years old and not a party to the case. Prepare Documentation: Gather and complete the necessary documents you wish to serve by mail. Address and Mail: Place the documents in a sealed and stamped envelope, addressed to the recipient.
If the alteration is minor, the approval can be done by any licensed AP mechanic. However, if the alteration is deemed to be major, it requires a mechanic with an Inspection Authorization (IA), in order to sign the approval block on the 337 form and submit it to the FAA.
