What does BR20 mean on a light bulb?

BR20 bulbs are often referred to as R20 but have the same characteristics of other BR bulb types. The R stands for reflector. Numbers in each code refer to the bulbs diameter in one-eighths of an inch. BR20/R20 bulb: 20/8 = 2-1/2 diameter. BR30 bulb: 30/8 = 3-3/4 diameter.

Can I use A19 instead of BR20?

A: Yes! The A19 bulb is just a bit shorter than a BR20, so dont expect it to extend down as far, but I had the same situation and I like the effect.

Are PAR20 and R20 bulbs the same?

The R20 has a rounded convex lens vs the mostly flat Par20 (or concave with the Phillips LED). They are generally interchangeable if the bulb simply screws into the fixture with no trim attaching to the face.

Are R and Br bulbs interchangeable?

The difference between a BR20, BR30, and BR40 is actually the size or diameter of the light bulb. The number represents increments of an 8th of an inch. For example, a BR30 is 30/8ths of an inch or 30 divided by 8 which equals 3.75 in diameter. The same example applies to a PAR38.

A BR20 lamp has a nominal diameter of 20 eighths of an inch, or 2.5 inches. The BR20 bulbs is often referred to as R20 but it shares the same characteristics of other BR bulb types. BR lamps are commonly fitted to an E26 medium screw base.
