In 2021, ATT spun off DirecTV into a privately held company, with TPG coming aboard as a 30% stakeholder. The six-year period during which ATT owned DirecTV produced tens of billions of losses for shareholders, overlapping with the ill-fated 2018 acquisition of Time Warner for $85 billion.
SAN FRANCISCO FORT WORTH, TX September 30, 2024 TPG (NASDAQ: TPG), a leading global alternative asset management firm, today announced it has reached an agreement to acquire from ATT the remaining 70% stake in DIRECTV that it does not already own.
While we believed a combination of DirecTV and Dish would have benefited all stakeholders, we have terminated the transaction because the proposed exchange terms were necessary to protect DirecTVs balance sheet and our operational flexibility, DirecTV CEO Bill Morrow said in a statement.
DirecTV is owned by ATT Inc. and joint-venture partner TPG Inc. In connection with Mondays deal, TPG will acquire the 70% stake in DirecTV that it doesnt already hold from ATT in a $7.6 billion cash transaction.
