Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) and Mini-Clinical Evaluation Exercise (Mini-CEX) are used on a continuum for performance assessments. OSCE assesses students in controlled settings whereas Mini-CEX is conducted in an authentic work environment as part of workplace-based assessments (WBAs).
The Mini-CEX utilizes a nine-point rating scale: 1 through 3 is unsatisfactory. 4 through 6 is satisfactory* 7 through 9 is superior.
The MiniCEX assesses clinical skills, attitudes and behaviours an in the non-primary care setting. It allows for feedback on performance from an experienced clinician about a real patient, in real time and provides valuable information to the Clinical Supervisor when completing their Clinical Supervisors Report (CSR).
In mini-CEX, an expert, usually a faculty member observes the actual encounter of the trainees with the patient at the workplace, rates their history taking, physical examination and counselling skills and provides feedback to them.
A Mini Clinical Evaluation Exercise (MiniCEX) is an observed, real-life, interaction between a doctor and a patient. The MiniCEX assesses clinical skills, attitudes and behaviours an in the non-primary care setting.
