The Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) It ranges from 0 to 100. This measurement can be used as an indicator of how hot shingles are likely to become when theyre exposed to the sun. The lower the SRI value, the hotter the asphalt shingles are likely to be in sunlight.
The Solar Reflective Index (SRI) measures how well a surface reflects heat instead of absorbing it. It is calculated using two key properties: Solar ReflectanceThe ability of a material to reflect sunlight.
For roofing materials, a good SRI value is typically above 78, signifying superior reflective properties.
HOW IS AN SRI VALUE DETERMINED? An SRI value is calculated using the roof surfaces Solar Reflectance (SR) and Thermal Emittance (TE). The diagram below describes SR and TE, which are measured values that range from 0 to 1, with 1 being the most reflective or emissive.
The SRI value for that material is determined using a formula that compares the calculated surface temperature with those of a standard white material and a standard black material under the same specified conditions. VARIOUS FACTORS CAN INFLUENCE a materials Solar Reflectance and the resulting calculated SRI value.
